238.Opening the Gates
238.开门
Jed stepped away from the work crew, put on a wool sweater and came over to take part in the weight lifting match. Several guys hesitated, but his entrance into the contest was within bounds. When he heard that, Mortimer stepped over and examined the rules without further ado! After reading it word by word he knew that they were right; Jed, a common worker and non-member of the club, could compete. Mortimer thought of withdrawing from the contest out of protest, but he decided not to. He was the favorite; he was not going to withdraw!
杰德离开工作人员，穿上羊毛衫，过来参加举重比赛。几个家伙有点儿犹豫，可是他来参加比赛是在适当范围之内。听到消息，莫蒂默走过来立即看了看比赛规则！一个字一个字地看过之后，他知道他们是对的：普通工人、非俱乐部成员杰德可以参加比赛。莫蒂默想过退出比赛以示抗议，但最后打消了念头。他是最有希望的获胜者，他才不退出呢！
Then the contest began. Words fail me to describe how amazed the members were that Jed did so well. With the exception of Mortimer they were all quite impressed. Mortimer was furious. He knew that with Jed in the contest he would really have to work at winning.
接着比赛就开始了。我无法用语言描述那些成员有多吃惊，因为杰德实在是太棒了。除莫蒂默之外，大家都留下了深刻的印象。莫蒂默愤怒了。他知道有杰德参加比赛，他得真的想办法取胜。
When the final competitors were just Jed and Mortimer, Mortimer could see that Jed was wondering about what he would do with the winning money. Wishful thinking, he said to Jed. And then Mortimer stood up to lift his weights.
等到最后的参赛者只剩下杰德和莫蒂默，莫蒂默能看出来杰德正在想拿那些赢来的钱干什么。痴心妄想吧，他对杰德说。然后站起来开始举重。
He struggled, but he succeeded.
他挣扎了一会儿，可是他成功了。
Then Jed lifted the same weights with flying colors! He even lifted them with his eyes shut! Mortimer began to get nervous.
接着杰德成功地举起了同样的重量！他甚至是轻而易举举起来的！莫蒂默开始感到紧张了。
On the next round Mortimer lost. Jed was the champion. Jed was the winner. It was within reason that Mortimer would congratulate Jed. He didn't give one sign with respect to Jed!
在下一轮比赛中莫蒂默输了。杰德获得了冠军。杰德是胜利者。莫蒂默对杰德表示祝贺是合情合理的。可他没有对杰德做出怀着尊重的表示！
As he left Mortimer turned and said something to everyone that they would always remember word for word!
他离开的时候，莫蒂默转身对大家说了一些话，他们将永远一字不改地记得这些话！
With the advent of a commoner winning this competition, you have opened the gates of your own demise!
“随着贫民赢得这场比赛，你们已经打开了自己的死亡之门！”
Then Jed said, "With regard to your reputation for sportsmanship, let it be known that you have none!"
接着杰德说，“就你在运动家品格方面的名声而言，让大家知道你欠缺得很厉害吧！”
